Carving Up The Shot

Taking shots for microstock has a proven model of profitability. By practicing practical photography techniques, shooting habits
This shot was taken on a image capture walkabout in the city of Burbank. There is a large presence there of entertainment companies, and a set of photos I took was the Disney corporate entrance on Verdugo Road. I liked this picture for several reasons.
The Disney logo is one of the most immediately recognizable on Earth. But how many branding opportunities exist? The idea that the Disney logo has a grip of steel, that its very outline suggests entertainment values, customer preferences, brand loyalty, and film history carries a large weight and impact within the shot.
But elegance is a big part of the successful microstock shot.
The iron decoration at periodic intervals along the fence reflects the physical intent to set a formal boundary, yet in a funny and immediately recognizable way. This type of picture is worth a thousand words, and in the limited blog frame has unlimited impact value.
This is a great photo for landscaping ideas, for decorating with a brand, for corporate development of the company of this name, or for an amusing photo to accompany some kind of Disney news item or anecdote. I like to submit large sets of continuing landscape exterior shots that tell a geographic story.
The considerations for a shot like this for microstock resale purposes are these: compose your shot so that shadows, tilt camera to avoid overlying brush, trees, flowers, leaves and other motifs like phone wires and elements like background building don’t intersect the main focus.
This is a good kind of shot to grab when the light is bright enough and coming at an angle which doesn’t flavor the background too heavily with building shadows. I had to work to get the focus right on the fence ornament, and I had to consider while taking the picture how much fence detail to include.
This is a great shot to demonstrate the power of symbolism. The Disney mouse motif extremely well copyrighted and protected, but this would be a great shot for an entertainment industry blog or quick and dirty Hollywood film biz ezines article. These customers will know how elastic their usages of these types of pictures can go.
One of the great things about microstock runs for taking photos is how it trains your eye to look for similar photographic payoffs down the line. I will definitely notice this type of landscape decoration next time I cruise a corporate headquarters.
