How Much to Invest in a Camera?
There are probably those who feel that a camera for earnings purposes should be a fixed variable of the amount potential to be earned. Certainly spending a lot of money on a camera with deluxe features had not been my plan. But using a camera or taking pictures for a revenue stream of income happened so fast I hardly had time to plan.
It would seem normal that a digital camera or an SLR would be some function numerically of what monies I could hope to earn against the total cost of the camera. It also seems feasible that a choice between conventional camera and digital camera would be swayed by use and opportunities to be repaid for any particular camera type.
That is, I’m sure I felt that if my demand in the photo market for stock photos or text photos or article accompaniment photos centered around a certain type of shot, the decision was going to be made for me. I’m sure I would have agreed with that matrix at some point, but my photography career took off so fast I almost got swept away.
I had a 6 megapixel digital camera from my father lying around doing nothing. It had some video capability and had reserved the camera fro a rainy day manual review. That day never came, so when I accepted an assignment for a full set of photos from one of my website clients I set out to conquer the photography world.
After doing the cable/storage card fandango I was ready to go. The results at first were static and formulaic, since I was lensing from a viewpoint of what was “supposed” to be in the shot. But some real sunlight and new building projects near my residence got me juiced creatively. I started to play with angles, composition, and color.
Problem is, the lens capability and settings didn’t quite flow with my use. The tulip was letting me down. Furthermore, I was seeing more great camera taking potential in my viewfinder than I was bringing back on my memory stick. I was surprised after a few weeks of working with a 6 megapixel camera that I felt I had not enough camera. Six megapixels was surely enough power to capture high quality images, yes?
I reviewed the software available and saw that I could invest an unlimited amount of time skewing, pasting, cropping and finishing pictures. My approach was to get a cleaner camera with smoother image capturing capabilities. The work was there, and the earnings potential immediate. I just had to get a better picture taking instrument for me.
I realized that taking digital pictures, filming video, and organizing a day around shooting meant I was more intentionally headed toward amateur picture taking than I even knew.
